Islamic Relief welcomes news of last night’s ceasefire announcement between Lebanon and Israel. With more than a fifth of the population displaced, the people of Lebanon are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. Over 2,000 people were killed in Israeli attacks on cities, hospitals, schools, bridges, and homes since 2 March.
Despite the positive development, the 10-day ceasefire remains fragile. It applies only to the area of Lebanon north of the Litani river and selectively covers air-based attacks while the Israeli ground invasion remains unchanged. People in Lebanon are fearful that the ceasefire is temporary and that the fighting will resume.
Islamic Relief hopes the ceasefire holds and urges international government with leverage and all parties involved to ensure that it is fully respected.
Commenting on the announcement of the ceasefire, Islamic Relief Lebanon country director, Akram Sadeq said:
“The humanitarian needs in Lebanon are now massive. The people of the country are desperately in need of support and humanitarian assistance which can only be implemented fully when the bombs stop falling. We welcome the ceasefire and urge all parties to it to do all they can to maintain it.”
“The Lebanese people are happy but wary about the ceasefire. Some displaced people are cautiously returning to the south but keeping their belongings in government shelters. Others are remaining in Beirut or other cities because they are sceptical that the ceasefire will hold. The Lebanese are still fearful that this ceasefire is temporary and there is a high probability that things might escalate. “
Islamic Relief is delivering emergency aid to people in Beirut, Mount Lebanon, Bekaa valley and other locations of the country including providing food, water and other essential resources to thousands of people in government run shelters.
