Islamic Relief aid workers in Beirut say families are terrified after the deadliest day of bombing to hit Lebanon in many years.
There are reports of hundreds of people killed and more than 1,000 wounded after over 100 Israeli airstrikes struck in less than one hour.
Sana Basim, Islamic Relief’s head of programmes in Beirut, says:
“This was the worst and deadliest hour we’ve ever had. It felt like there was a new airstrike every minute. The city is in a state of fear.
“An Islamic Relief team was distributing aid in a shelter for displaced people when the bombs started around 3 kms away. The strike could be heard in the shelter and the children were crying in terror.
“Bombs struck near crowded markets and hospitals across the city are overwhelmed with casualties. Blood banks are running short of blood. Busy areas of the city which were previously considered relatively safe were hit without warning and the streets are jammed with traffic as people flee in panic.”
Fortunately no Islamic Relief staff were harmed. Casualties are still being confirmed and rising.
Islamic Relief is working in coordination with the Lebanese government to distribute food, water, blankets and hygiene kits to displaced civilians in Beirut, Mount Lebanon, the Bekaa valley and southern Lebanon.
